SUMMARY:YCEDE Inclusive Research Network event “Candid Conversations: Nav
 igating Life Behind the PhD”
DESCRIPTION:This online PGR-led event will explore how three PhD students h
ave tackled the ups and downs of their research degree\, exploring the per
sonal aspects of PhD journeys that aren’t often talked about. From crush
ed hopes and unfulfilled expectations to surprising highlights and motivat
ing encounters\, we want to hear about how these experiences have been nav
igated and the impact they have had on each student's research journey.\n\
nThe session will run as a panel chaired by two of YCEDE’s scholarship h
olders\, Lubena and Amirah\, followed by some time for questions from atte
ndees.\n\nThe event is part of the Inclusive Research Network event seri
es.\n\nYCEDE\n\nThe Yorkshire Consortium for Equity in Doctoral Education
(YCEDE) is a collaboration between five universities in Yorkshire\, 12 UKR
I funded Doctoral Training partnerships and Centres for Doctoral Training
plus a number of external partners dedicated to equity at doctoral level.
Central to YCEDE is the question of access to doctoral study for graduates
from Black\, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.\n\nOfS\, Research Eng
land and YCEDE partners have committed to invest more than £3.6 million o
ver 4 years to improve access and participation of BAME people in postgrad
uate research study across Yorkshire. The project is divided into four wor
kstreams led by different people and involving all partners. University of
Bradford is involved in Workstream 3: Enhancing the on-course doctoral ex
perience lead by Prof Udy Archibong. The workstream will develop a tailore
d mentoring package for PGRs of Colour through developing 1-2-1 mentoring
with academics and non-academics.\n\nAnalysis of doctoral application succ
ess rates at YCEDE partners show that home fee paying People of Colour are
less likely to receive an offer than White British applicants\, but where
they receive an offer\, are just as likely to go on to enrol as White app
licants. As a consequence\, important voices are not heard\, and as a resu
lt\, the research enterprise is deprived of invaluable opportunities for c
reative problem solving. YCEDE aims to reduce the gap in access to PGR edu
cation between home fee paying BAME and White applicants and thus the ethn
icity gap in progression into academic and other research careers.\n\nwww.
