SUMMARY:UK Data Service: Introduction to anonymisation techniques for socia
 l sciences research data
DESCRIPTION:Researchers are often at a crossroads on how to share data coll
ected from human participants ethically while complying with the rigorous
standards set by UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protec
tion Act. Whether you're looking to refine your data management strategy o
r ensure your research practices are in strict alignment with the UK legis
lation\, this event will provide you with a solid foundation in the princi
ples and practicalities of data anonymisation.\n\nThis session is designed
to equip researchers with the essential knowledge and skills to navigate
the complexities of data anonymisation. From survey data to transcript dat
a and audio/visual materials researchers must have a keen eye on safeguard
ing privacy. We will cover key concepts as defined by applicable data prot
ection legislation and outlined by the Information Commissioner's Office (
ICO) guidance\, from definitions of personal data to identifiability and e

rticipants will learn the nuances of de-identification versus anonymisatio
n techniques\, how to differentiate between directly identifying informati
on and indirect identifiers and how to best handle special category data\,
with the view of sharing data ethically and legally.\n\nThe workshop will
conclude with a dedicated Q&amp\;A session.\n\nPresenters: Maureen Haaker
  and Cristina Magder\n\nLevel: Introductory\n\nExperience/knowledge requir
ed: Basic understanding of research methods in the social sciences and of
data protection legislation are recommended but not required.\n\nTarget au
dience: Academic and non-academic data professionals such as researchers\,
data managers\, data stewards and others involved in collecting data\, or
managing datasets for wider sharing and re-use.\n\nThis event will be liv
estreamed on our UK Data Service YouTube channel but the chat will be di
sabled. By registering and attending the Zoom event you will be able to as
k questions and interact.\n\nRecordings of UK Data Service events are made
available on our YouTube channel and\, together with the slides\, on ou
r past events pages soon after the event has taken place.\n\nThis event is
part of our UK Data Service introductory training series: Autumn 2024.\n
\nBook your place via the UK Data Service website.
