 \n\nSummary:\n\nThere is increasing interest in collaborative research eng
 aging different disciplines/sectors and methods. Are there some proven app
 roaches in planning a large collaborative project involving both qualitati
 ve and quantitative research that ensure the qualitative contribute is opt
 imized?\n\nI begin by describing the appeal of mixed methods. Using exampl
 es from both academic journals and student research projects\, I discuss s
 tudies that mix both qualitative and quantitative or just mix different qu
 alitative methods.\n\nI then outline the limitations of the suggestion tha
 t\, by using mixed methods\, we can reveal the ‘whole picture’ of some
  social phenomenon. I also draw attention to the naïve positivist assumpt
 ions behind much mixed methods research.\n\nMost mixed methods research be
 gins with quantitative data and then moves on to qualitative materials\, u
 sually open-ended interviews. I criticize the assumption that this allows 
 us to ‘go deeper’ or more empathetically into social phenomena.\n\nQua
 ntitative research must define its variables at the outset in order to mea
 sure them reliably. In my view\, the beauty of qualitative research is tha
 t\, mostly using naturalistic data\, it allows us to understand how social
  phenomena are put together rather than to legislate their character at th
 e outset. I conclude by demonstrating a more fruitful division of labour b
 etween quantitative and qualitative research through which we can gain by
