SUMMARY:Intermediate Supervisor Development Award - Session 3
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE NEW DATE - 11th MAY\n\nThe Intermediate Supervisor 
 Development Award is designed to support research supervisors to develop t
 heir practice as they progress their supervision activity. It provides an 
 opportunity for Sheffield Hallam supervisors to connect with a cross-Unive
 rsity community of practice.\n\nTo achieve the Award requires completion o
 f three sessions: Managing Relationships\; Supporting Research and Writing
 \; Monitoring Progress\, Pastoral Support and Continuous Professional Deve
 lopment.\n\nPlease note\, this cross-university development programme repl
 aces the Supervisor Passport initiative. It forms part of a central three-
 pronged supervisor development offer delivered by the Doctoral School alon
 gside the Doctoral Supervisor Development Course (aimed at supervisors n
 ew to research supervision at Sheffield Hallam) and UKCGE research superv
 isor recognition application support (offering opportunities for good sup
 ervisory practice to be recognised through peer-review and a national awar
 d). The three-pronged offer enables supervisors to select the most appropr
 iate level of training to meet their needs\, rather than having to work th
 rough the different ‘levels’\, in turn.\n\nSession 1: Managing Relatio
 nships\n\nThis session explores building and managing relationships betwee
 n candidates and supervisors and between the supervisory team. We will be 
 covering areas such as:\n\n· Understanding the diversity of the student p
 opulation and its implications for supervision\n· How to set expectations
 \n· Understand different supervisory styles\n· Recognise the changing ne
 eds of students throughout their doctoral journey\n· Managing supervisory
  teams\n· Understanding institutional regulations and the support systems
  available\n\nSession 2: Supporting Research and Writing\n\nThis session f
 ocuses on the various approaches that may be employed to support candidate
 s to research\, write and publish throughout their doctoral journey. In ad
 dition\, understand the importance of providing meaningful feedback and su
 pport. The themes covered in this session will include:\n\n· Discussing c
 onceptions and misconceptions of research\n· Considering issues of academ
 ic integrity\, intellectual property\, co-publications\n· Finalising and 
 developing research topics\, methodologies\, proposals and ethics\n· Advi
 sing on skills development and understanding the available support systems
  within the University for Doctoral students.\n· How to provide construct
 ive and actionable feedback\n· Modelling the process of publication\n· E
 stablishing a post-doctoral dissemination plan\n\nSession 3: Monitoring Pr
 ogress\, Pastoral Support and Continuous Professional Development\n\nThis 
 session explores the wider skills and responsibilities of doctoral supervi
 sors. These include acting as a mentor\, supporting career aspirations and
  being a good role model. Areas covered in this session will include:\n\n
 · Keeping students motivated\n· Managing the progress of students\n· Su
 pporting candidates with personal issues\, well-being\, work-life balance 
 etc.\n· Understanding University Support Structures and Policies\n· Prov
 iding career guidance and support\n\nIf you are interested in completing t
